Money, but make it internet

A globe wrapped in a glowing orbit, money moving at internet speed.

Banks were built for a world of paper, branches and 9-to-5 hours. The internet was not. Here's what happens when money finally catches up.

Quick vibe check: you can send a 4K video to someone in Sydney in three seconds, for free, from your bed. But sending them $50 might take three days, cost $30, and require you to know what a SWIFT code is. That gap is the entire reason fintech exists.

The old system, briefly

Traditional banks run on rails built in the 1970s. Payments move in batches, on business days, through chains of other banks that each take a look (and a cut). It works, in the way a fax machine works. It exists. It is not impressive.

Enter the neobank

A payment squeezing through a tangle of old banking machinery before a single straight beam carries it to a Kairo card.

A neobank is a bank-shaped app with no branches, no queues and no "please hold, your call is important to us". Your money still sits with regulated institutions; the app is just a much nicer front door. Think of it as the difference between ordering food on your phone and phoning the restaurant.

Then crypto showed up

Blockchains added something banks never had: a shared ledger anyone can use, that never closes. Stablecoins (digital dollars, more in guide 03) turned that into a practical way to move real money at internet speed. The crypto bit is the plumbing. You don't need to see the pipes to enjoy the shower.

And now AI

The newest layer is assistants that don't just show you your balance but actually do things: pay the rent, split the bill, flag that you're about to go broke before Friday. Menus were fine. Sentences are better.

Translation for your parents: "It's like a bank, but the app is good, it works in other countries, and it doesn't close at 4pm."

TL;DR Money is becoming software. Neobanks fixed the front end, stablecoins fixed the rails, AI is fixing the effort. You're early, not late.

One account. More ways to move.
