Agentic commerce: when your AI has a wallet
Sep 26, 2026 6 min read

Chatbots answer questions. Agents do things. The next step is agents that can pay. Here's how that works, why it's exciting, and why it needs guardrails thicker than a bank vault.
From "ask" to "do"
An assistant like Kai works in three modes. Ask: "what did I spend on food last month?" Know: it notices you'll be short before rent and tells you first. Do: "send Tunde 50 dollars for the tickets" becomes a confirmation screen, not a six-tap journey. Agentic commerce is "do" with money attached: the agent can complete a purchase, not just find it.
What it looks like in practice
- "Book the cheapest direct flight to Accra on the 14th, under $400." The agent searches, picks, pays, and shows you the receipt.
- "Renew whatever subscriptions I actually used this month and cancel the rest."
- "Pay the invoice from Ada when it arrives, if it's under $2,000."
The plumbing, briefly

Three pieces have to exist for this to work safely:
- Agent identity. The merchant needs to know a real person's agent is paying, not a bot farm. Card networks and wallet providers are building credentials for exactly this: a way for an agent to prove "I act for this human, within these limits."
- Scoped permissions. You don't give the agent your whole balance. You give it a mandate: this much, for this purpose, until this date. Stablecoins are useful here because programmable money can carry its own rules.
- Confirmation and audit. Every action leaves a trail you can read, and anything outside the mandate comes back to you as a question, not a surprise.
Why the guardrails are the product
An agent that can spend is only as good as the box you put it in. The rules that matter: it never moves money outside the limit you set, it never guesses when it lacks information, it shows you what it's about to do before it does it, and you can revoke it in one tap. Anything less is not an assistant. It's a liability with a friendly voice.
Where Kai sits today
Ask and Know are live. Do currently ends at a confirmation screen you tap. Kai never moves money on its own, and conversations are cleared after 24 hours. Fully agentic purchases are next, and they'll arrive with the mandate model above, not before it.
TL;DR Agents that pay are coming. The interesting engineering isn't the paying; it's the permission box around it. Judge any AI wallet by how easy it is to say "no" and "stop".
