Stablecoins, explained like we're texting

A dollar that moves like a message. That's it. That's the tweet. But since you're here, the slightly longer version.

ok so what is it

A stablecoin is a digital token designed to always be worth exactly one unit of a real currency, almost always the US dollar. One USDC = one dollar. Yesterday, today, during a market meltdown, at 3am on a Sunday. That's the whole job.

how is it "stable" tho

The company that issues the coin holds actual dollars and short-term US government bonds, roughly one dollar for every coin out there. Accountants check the pile and publish reports. It's a voucher with receipts.

This is the opposite of Bitcoin, whose price is set by what people feel like paying that day. Bitcoin is a rollercoaster. A stablecoin is a lift.

why would I want a digital dollar

A dollar coin gliding along a steady glowing track, a stablecoin holding its value against the dollar.
  • It moves fast. Lagos to Toronto in minutes, not days. Weekends included.
  • It's cheap. Sending usually costs cents, not a percentage of your money.
  • It holds value. If your local currency is having a season, a dollar balance is a calm place to sit.
  • Anyone can receive it. No US bank account required to hold US dollars.

where does it live

On a blockchain: a public ledger that records every transfer and never closes. You don't need to understand the chain any more than you need to understand TCP/IP to send a meme. Apps like Kairo handle that layer; you just see a balance and a send button.

what's the catch

Two things. First, a stablecoin is only as good as the company behind it and the reserves it holds. Stick to the big, audited ones (guide 04 has the tier list). Second, where you keep it matters. Lose the keys to a self-custody wallet and the money is gone forever, no customer service line, no "forgot password". Custodial apps exist for exactly that reason.

Pop quiz: Your cousin says "stablecoins are crypto so they're risky like Bitcoin." Correct response: "Stablecoins use the same rails as Bitcoin the way email uses the same internet as TikTok. Different thing entirely."

TL;DR Stablecoin = dollar with an internet connection. Fast, cheap, global, boring on purpose. Boring is the feature.

One account. More ways to move.
